Polywrap. Is it absolutely necessary, or is it just nice to have?
Have you thought about mailing your catalogue without it?
We have seen more and more of our clients mailing unwrapped catalogues, benefiting from both reduced production and postal costs, as well as enhancing environmental credentials.
Environmental benefits
According to Royal Mail, around 1.9 billion items were sent plastic-wrapped last year, accounting for 12% of total post volumes. Although some polywrap options are degradable (over time)
when in landfill, recycling is not currently readily available for local council kerbside collections.
Reduced production costs
Depending on the mailing volume, you can probably purchase 30 micron clear polythene for between £4 and £8 per thousand. It then becomes a balance between reduced production costs and
the need for mailers to continue in their current format if they require inserts (naked mailings cannot include inserts).
Reduced postal costs
With no outer or carrier sheet, the mailing pack weight may be reduced by up to 10g.
There are also additional postal discounts available for environmentally friendly mailings. Both levels of the Responsible Mail product prohibit the use of polywrap.
